Rusted

This is another photo from my trip to the architectural salvage yard a few days ago. As I mentioned previously, a few metres past the entrance, no patch of wall is left uncovered. This photo was taken of another object along the wall.

There is no rhyme to what is placed there; it seems to be anything that the owner likes the look of. On my way out, I stopped to admire everything that lined the wall, and spotted a group of cogs. I decided to focus on one cog as I wanted to capture all of the details that can only be seen close up. I only focused on part of the single cog to add interest to the photo, as it makes it seem a little abstract.

I had to under-expose the photo slightly to get a fast enough shutter speed to keep it sharp; I corrected this in Photoshop. I increased the brightness and contrast to make the image more vibrant. I then decreased the saturation almost completely, as I wanted to push forward the idea of age, while not completely losing the colour of rust. I’m really pleased with this image; it took a little longer to edit than normal as I was being fussy, but it was definitely worth it!

Changing Perspectives

I took this picture recently at a local firework display. I rediscovered it this evening as I was looking for something to upload. I loved the colours in it, but most of all I loved the patterns that were created- giving me the idea to try something different.

It seems rather regular that when someone takes a picture of a firework, it’ll be full of colour, a little hazy but taken using a slow shutter speed to capture all the magic of it. The last point may conform, but I wanted my picture to be a little more unique. I took the average firework photo, and de-saturated it to make it look more  abstract. I then increased the contrast to make it stand out more, and over sharpened the image to create more defined lines.

My post may be a little more Photoshop than photo skills this evening, but I like it and it’s a nice refreshing break from normality! Oh, and I think I’ve dragged out the suspense long enough. The photo I uploaded on the 19th of this month was of a rope light at an outside broadcast. I took the photo using a slow shutter speed to allow me time to move the camera to form a pattern, which was repeated exactly by each LED in the series. I think this should be a more prominent point with photographers; how to turn something ordinary into something that will intrigue.

Time to celebrate!

Today, Daily Wanders celebrates being one month old with over 1500 page views. Having such a large audience after such a short space of time is something I feel rather proud of, and it seems odd to think that just over a month ago we were discussing how to go about starting our blog.

As mentioned in a previous post, I have been creating my photography wall. Yesterday I got to the fun part of putting everything together. While choosing the pictures for my wall I came across this photograph of a firework. This was taken a few months ago at a national fireworks competition in Plymouth.

In order to get a clear view I had to balance on a wall, which was made harder by a slow shutter speed. This particularly impresses me because it wasn’t taken on my SLR for fear of it getting dropped or stolen, but on a normal Samsung compact camera. I didn't have to edit it in Photoshop at all, so perhaps there is hope yet for compact cameras?

I hope you have enjoyed following us on our adventures this last month as much as we have enjoyed writing about them. I look forward to many months to come.
