I was once again looking through some photos that I had taken a while ago on a photography wander. I saw this one and thought it had some good potential so I had a look at it to see what I could do with it.

When taking the photo I had the camera in aperture priority with an aperture of F11 selected. The camera matched this with a shutter speed of 1/160^th of a second with ISO 100. I boosted the colour saturation and the contrast in camera to give the photo more punch.

This photo needed quite a lot of editing; the first thing I did was to crop the photo down so that the attention is focussed onto the correct area. I then increased the contrast and the colour saturation further to make the photo look really dynamic!

I like how this photo has come out and I think the editing has made the photo look much better than before. Hopefully Bex and I will get a chance to go for a photo graphy wander at some point during the Easter holiday.

Stormy Horizon

I took this photo on Tuesday when I visited town with Mat; after we stopped for coffee, we walked along the harbour side. The British weather isn’t very reliable at the best of times, but it didn’t seem too bad when we got off of the bus; we were sorely mistaken. Whilst walking along the harbour, the sky began to get darker, and streaks of rain became visible. As photogenic as this was; it’s needless to say that we didn’t stay much longer!!!

I tried to under-expose this shot to capture the full presence of the storm, with all the layers within- I think I managed this incredibly well. For some reason, there appear to be vertical lines stretching throughout the image that I couldn’t edit out. Never the less, I liked the image and chose to upload it regardless. I sharpened the picture in Photoshop, to enhance the prominence of the flags and other details of the ship. I also increased contrast in an attempt to make the clouds more dramatic. Apart from this, I have not edited the image, as I didn’t want to make the lines any worse.

I’m really pleased with this image; I think we were very lucky on two accounts. The first being the picturesque scene, the second being that we made it on the bus before the heavens opened!!

Pavement Under Lamps

This is another one of the photos that I took while at the harbour lights show. While walking around the harbour I found a long stretch along one side. I thought they could make an interesting composition as they were all in one line.

After I had taken the photo I looked at the image on the background and saw that the light had flared up around the lamp. This wasn’t an effect I was trying to capture but it was a very nice mistake! I really like the effect it created because it was very abstract and was on all of the lamps down the row. To create the best effect I used an aperture of F7.1, this gives a large depth of field when I focused onto the nearest lamppost. But by using a smaller aperture I had to use a higher ISO, by doing this it created quite a lot of noise in the photo.

To edit the photo the first thing that I did was to reduce the amount of noise in the photo and to sharpen the photo. After that I straightened it because I had accidently taken the photo on an odd angle. I boosted the contrast and increased the brightness; this makes the photo look more punchy and a lot less flat than before.

Overall I’m impressed with this photo, I would have liked to remove all of the noise but this was not possible so I did the best that my editing software could do. I like the effect I managed to capture in this photo; it shows that photography isn’t just about pure skill, there is a certain amount of luck involved to keep you on your toes!

Going for Gold

Like many others this evening, I have been watching the opening ceremony. It’s rather surreal to think that after all the preparation of the last seven years; the Olympics are finally upon us.

I took this picture the last time Mat and I went on holiday. On the first day, we went into the city centre. In the afternoon, it was incredibly hot so we sat down outside of the town hall. The torch had just gone past meaning London 2012 flags were prolific. As I was walking up the steps of the town hall I looked to my left and saw the flags stretching down the street. I took this using a shallow depth of field so only the first two flags could be read easily.

I have been saving this picture for the most suitable time; and none seems more suitable than the evening of the opening ceremony. I have never spent longer on a blog post than today- I started typing nearly 2 hours earlier! However, I will admit that my attention was divided.

I hope you’re enjoying the opening ceremony too, and enjoy the Olympics- wherever you’re from. One thing I must say… GO ON BRITAIN!!!!

Getting Patriotic

This weekend will be a time of celebration and patriotism! As we approach her Majesty’s diamond jubilee, everywhere you look there are union flags and it is this season’s most on trend print. The diamond jubilee isn’t the only thing I’m exited for, as tomorrow Daily Wanders will have been active for 2 months!!!

I took this picture during a wander through a local market, and every single stand had union flag printed items on it. I particularly liked this, as the flags fitted into everything else in the market. I used flash in this picture, which I think may have been a mistake. However, later on I lowered the brightness and I think it was salvaged.
